We’re often asked the question: Can a jeweller tell if a diamond is lab created? Lab grown diamonds and mined diamonds are anatomically, chemically & physically exactly the same which means that it is very difficult to tell them apart. The truth is that jewellers and gemologists cannot tell the difference between mined and lab grown diamonds without specialised equipment. Read on to find out how lab grown diamonds can be differentiated from mined diamonds!
Can A Diamond Tester Detect Lab Grown Diamonds?
Diamond testers are a tool which easily distinguishes fake diamonds from real diamonds using thermal or electrical conductivity. However this test does not work to distinguish mined diamonds & lab diamonds seeing as lab grown diamonds are real and therefore conduct heat & electricity in the same way. This means that the diamond tester will show lab diamonds as real diamonds.
Whether you are looking to purchase a lab grown diamond or a natural diamond, make sure that your diamond has been certified by an independent diamond grading laboratory.
The certificate will state if the diamond is lab grown, making this one of the easiest ways to tell them apart.
Lab grown and mined certified diamonds often have a microscopic laser inscription on their girdle. As you can see from the image, the number on your diamond will match the number on your certificate so you can be sure that your diamond is as described on its certificate. If the diamond is lab grown the laser number will start with ‘LG’ to identify this as a lab grown diamond. A jeweller will be able to identify a lab grown diamond in this way using a 30x jewellers loupe.
Overall, the only way a jeweller can be 100% sure if the diamond is lab grown or natural is by checking its certificate and laser inscription. If the diamond is not certified it is very difficult to tell whether or not it is lab grown, the only way to be 100% sure if a diamond is lab grown or not is to send it to a gemological laboratory for grading. We recommend only choosing a diamond which has been certified to give you peace of mind that your diamond is sold to you accurately.
